The Journey at a Glance

Jökulfirðir is unlike any other fjords in Iceland – carved into the country’s oldest rock, just a short distance from the Arctic Circle. Here, nature has remained largely untouched since the Ice Age. Once home to small coastal communities, these fjords were gradually abandoned as modern life moved elsewhere. Today, Arctic foxes roam freely, seabirds nest on cliffs, and the remains of old farmsteads stand as quiet reminders of the past.

For those seeking solitude and pristine landscapes, Jökulfirðir offers a unique experience—skiing in remote mountains where every turn is earned. This ski & sail adventure combines breathtaking scenery, rewarding ascents, and untouched descents, all while being immersed in the tranquility of Iceland’s wild nature.

Daily Schedule

(Our route is always flexible — we may go the other way around depending on weather)

Day 1: Ísafjörður Harbor – Hrafnsfjörður

The adventure begins at 14:00 at Ísafjörður harbor, where the crew of Aurora welcomes you aboard. We will eat late lunch in harbor onboard Aurora and set sail on a 4–6 hour journey towards Hrafnsfjörður, anchoring for the night in the heart of Jökulfirðir.

Day 2: Hrafnfjörður

After breakfast, we prepare for a full day of ski touring. The fjords provide endless opportunities for fresh tracks in one of the most remote and untouched landscapes in Iceland.

Day 3 & 4: Hrafnfjörður - Lónafjörður

This will be the longest traverse of our journey, skinning from Hrafnfjörður to Lónafjörður. Aurora will await us in Sópandi Bay when we descend and move to Miðkjós, where we will spend two nights. Mussel picking, sauna tent experience, and dipping into the Atlantic. Lónafjörður offers amazing day tours in all shapes and sizes, with the steep couloir Einbúi for expert skiers, if conditions allow.

DAy 5 & 6: Lónafjörður - Veiðileysufjörður.

Two nights in Lónafjörður are hardly enough. We will traverse to Veiðileysufjörður on the afternoon of the 18th, with incredible views over the national park. This traverse is shorter than the previous one and offers amazing skinning & skiing.

Day 7: Veiðileysufjörður - Hesteyrarfjörður

The last traverse is between those beautiful fjords. The day starts early as our departure for Ísafjörður is scheduled at 14:00 with an ETA in Ísafjörður at 18:00, with a dinner reservation at the famous Tjöruhúsið.

VHF Aurora recommends Hótel Óðinsvé in Reykjavik and Hótel Ísafjörður.
